The chain comes off on the inside of the shoe and...

The chain comes off on the inside of the shoe and wraps from the inside. We had to take off the rear wheel and rotate the crank in reverse to unwind the chain.

No, we are on a Santana cycling tour and Ventoux was one of the possible routes for the day. We did ride up the same route that the TdF did.

The context of your comment is elusive. The TdF climbed Ventoux two days before us. This is the point with the signage where pictures are taken. We had to wait in line for our turn at the sign.
