If the drivetrain is working nicely, and the spread of gearing works for your riding, I wouldn’t upgrade to 27 speed.

21 gears are plenty if they’re the right gears!

Good spot.
The brake action is a bit stiffer than with canti levers, but it's not too bad. I will see how he gets on with the v-brake levers and swap them out if necessary.
