That's not an ideal place to mount a waterbottle, especially if your bike lacks mudguards. So why is it there? I mount a fuel bottle there when I'm bike camping.

It's a mid-level "sport-touring" bike; not a "team" racing bike by any means. Trek's racing team bikes were custom frames, built to spec for individual riders.
