+1 FX. It was a toss up for me when I recently bought my DS, but for the riding you'll be doing the FX fits the bill nicely, assuming you get fit right at the LBS.

My 8.5 has the cables running thru the frame. Haven't had it long enough to comment on longevity, but one thing I've noticed is that I'm not pinching any cables when I mount it on my car rack. Nice.

Trek DS 8.2 or 8.3 ... great dual purpose bike in your price range. Nothing wrong with the FX at all, but DS might give you more flexibility on trails and grass, and be more forgiving in weather.
