Interesting - I suspected this might be the case, but the internet in unison says 'any 8 speed derailleur with any 8 speed cassette (plus any chain and any shifter) - its all compatible !

New cable and new housing, derailleur lubed, shifter lubed. Far less resistance. No difference to shifting. On the plus side the 'push push click' is easier now.

I'm still wondering if the new smaller cassette is just too small for a derailleur...
