Before you pitch it, verify cable is not kinked or fraying inside the shifter, or put new cable in. Sometimes stubbornness to go to smallest cogs is a symptom of cable kinking inside mechanism.

Not likely for me. I typically can ride 3x/week. We are talking an epic century for Saturday, but even so that gets me 200-ish miles for the week. I am well over 5K for the year, so that's not bad.
