That stuff is basically layered foam and rubber of difference densities. I have one of their back protectors and they are very highly rated in impact tests and real world results.

The only thing I can think of is I do have a Garmin GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor on the bike, but I don't know if it would default to that if it lost cadence data from the power meter.
