i don't know what gear spread is, but you could still be rid of the half step (if that's ultimate aim) and go with a closer range 5spd freewheel and a typical crossover/alpine triple...

what's your concern for spreading the frame to 130? it won't hurt anything. i've done it to nearly all of my vintage steel frames as have many others. i don't care for the 2x4 method...
