Thanks for your ideas. I did clean, degrease and re-grease all the parts with my usual yellow grease. I did most likely deform the spring when bending it. I was ill-equipped for the task and deformed...

Thanks for your post. I discovered the exact same issue on my shifter and was happy to see your fix. I still need to wrap my head around the way the spring is linked to the frame via the flat end.
