Shimano 5800/6800 is untouchable cost--performance-wise.
Also completely agree on the crankset issue. None of the other components polarize nearly as much.
Personally, I'd look towards Sugino XD...

I have had this problem. Dropout screws or moving the wheel to the very back of the dropout helps. Otherwise: close the quick release really really really hard.

Curious. I'm no fan of how modern Shimano cranks look. But brakes? Tiagra or 105 brakes with silver finish look very presentable to my eyes, even on C&V frames. Good bang-for-the-buck.
