I have been riding for a long time, but only started racing on the road at 42, and then on the track at 44. I sometimes race against people not much older than my kids! Don't be put off by it.

I buy expensive shoes, but always last year’s model when they get reduced in the sales.

Do they perform better? Hard to know. But they are definitely a lot more comfortable and last longer.

My recommendation would be to try some out. Loan/test saddles from a shop are a great option.

Saddles are such a personal thing. One persons favourite can be like a razor blade to someone else.
