9" is more than enough, personally I always cut my seatpost down to not carry any extra weight. If it's it a good 4" it should be fine but I'm not a professional but this has worked for me over 5...

I ride a 58cm Sparton and it's quite decent, I also had a Spicer which was just a Kilo. Comparing those 2 the Kilo built up easier, was lighter and more responsive and also came with a 1 1/8 headset....
