I'm not somewhere I can post photos at present, but it's like this. Each dropout has a "C" shape. The jaws of the C are slightly too narrow for the skewer to fit.

Sorry, I misspoke. It's not the spacers on the axle. The skewer itself is too thick for the dropouts.

It's not the rear skewer, though, as far as I know. It's the same as was on the old fork.

Thanks for that. A few taps of the hammer on my spanner did the trick and loosened the lock ring. Probably should have taken the cranks off first... 😂

Update! The top and bottom cups came out pretty easy with just a screwdriver and a rubber mallet. I was able to replace both cups with a modest amount of banging on them with the mallet.

Sad to say that nlerner's fork that he sent me would not work with my headset. So my options now are to find another fork or to find another headset, and I think the latter is going to be far easier...
