It was a nice gold/yellow colour but unfortunately the left side was badly torn up. Whomever had the bike before put a clear sticky tape over it but it looks quite chewed up.

I've had good luck reshaping the face of an MTB stem so that it's allow the curves of a drop bar to go by. I use a thick cut-off wheel on a Dremel tool to do the cutting.

Yes, a lot of front deraillers don't use cable housing but I don't know if any rear deraillers other than the Shimano Dura Ace AX, 600 AX or Adamas AX were ever made that didn't use cable housing....
