I'd guess someone gave up on swapping out brake levers and shifters - they probably wanted to ditch the Gripshifts but then tried finding 6sp or 7sp brifters with hydraulics and lost all hope :)

Those are the 1989 sizes, though. 1988 catalog I'm looking at is hard to read. Looks like 525 21" and 560 22".
