I'd get it and put on normal brake levers. You can get them cheap enough. I'd also get a smaller chainring or cog if you want to do a fair amount of off-road stuff.

I just removed the lever part from the hood, and kept the hood. Comfortable, not annoying, and keeps my bike lookin like ****. This bike is definitely a beater, so it all works out.
