Ok, apparently ATF isn't too well liked around here. Maybe I try to oversimplify things - if the trend toward super specific lubes goes on, soon you'll get a RD pivot grease and a FD pivot grease.

In my experience, most tires can be mounted without problems either way. But when you're struggling with a difficult one, better start opposite the valve - sometimes it's the only way it will go.

If there's any axial play, I don't think it's from the bearings. Maybe the pedal body is sliding on the bearings? If so, the dustcap shouldn't be overtightened, using a shim would be better.

Update: 11 years and 2 months after I posted this, my Nexus 8 is still going strong at 60,000km. I drilled and tapped a hole and use ATF, drain and add 15ml every 5-6,000km. I have no complaints...
