I've ridden 9's for a year with no hassle, Got Juicy 5's for the wife's bike and they have caused some hassle (w/noise), but seem to be ok now. Both are good, I'd go with the 9's for less were I you.

I have an old M30 from 1998 which was my first MTB. The geometry sucks (think roadie), but the bike is tough as nails. It's fully rigid chromo, and I beat the heck out of it. Still rides fine!
