I've used the solvent Xylene on 2 or 3 bikes that were (poorly) spray painted. Soak a rag, rub hard, and the spray paint "washes" off, and the original finish looks great.

Raleigh Cycle Company of America

Picked up this mixte frame 10 speed at the junk yard last week. What do you know about Raleigh Cycle company of America? It was owned by Huffy, but this bike seems to be far beyond the quality I'd...

Catching up on my junkyard finds

Haven't posted in ages, and normally winter in Wisconsin is not time to find bikes, but for some reason the local junkyard has been my friend since November or so. Back in November I found the Trek...

junk yard bikes

I saw I was quoted about my local junk yard. It's a small, small town scrap yard. I know the owner and his family. But they do let people just walk in, look through the piles and buy things. I've...

Matt,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I knew Bike Forums wouldn't fail me. So maybe this one I polish up and ride for a year or so.

Help! What is it?

Haven't posted in over a year, in part because of a move (had to sell rather than buy) and partly because I'm not seeing the bargains that I saw 2-3 years ago. Talked to a fellow bike-accumulator,...

Wet, crumpled aluminum foil is my go-to rusty chrome solution. Sounds crazy, but just try it. Here is a place where "even a caveman can do it" really applies.

It is shocking what people will throw out, isn't it?
The scrapyard has been my go-to bike source for quite a few years. This year it has yielded this Schwinn Traveler, Peugeot and Gitane 10-speeds,...

"Barn Fresh"?

When vintage auto collectors score a relatively untouched car that has been stored away in a barn or garage for 40 or 50 years, they call it "barn fresh." I think C & V bike gatherers need their own...

79 Schwinn Traveler Xtra Lite

My local scrapyard has been quiet for the last month, until today when I spied this Schwinn. I gave it a washing and some air in the tires, and it's ready to ride. Appears to be a Japanese Schwinn,...

Trek 850 Mountain Track--USA-made--from the scrapyard

Our local scrapyard is very local, family-run, in a town of only 1300. I've developed a relationship with the owner and his sons. If I pick a handfull of parts, I always offer the owner $5-10,...

Saved from the Scrapyard II

After my Peugot 10-speed last week, I paid close attention to the local scrapyard this week. Found this Mongoose Maneuver. I'm guessing it's 90's (no suspension). It's definitely pre-XMart,...

Thanks so much for the advice. It was the mtb parts I was after, Shimano derailleurs for another project, but I couldn't pass up the Peugot. Thanks again. I like the adventure, so now I'll go...

Peugot from the scrap yard

Picked up this Peugot from the local scrap yard today, along with a few mtb parts, for $5.00. The frame is marked "Carbolite," which I'm assuming is some sort of carbon steel. It has Suntour...

1990 Giant Rincon

195828195829My catch on Monday was a 1990 Giant Rincon for $25 off the local CL. Obviously stored in the garage for the past 20+ years, still has its 1991 license sticker. Everything was in...

Raleigh Sprite 5 Speed - Advice needed

Here are a few photos of my latest find, a Raleigh Sprite 5 speed. (I was on vacation and saw it in a thrift store for $15--I know little about English bikes, but I couldn't resist.) I'm guessing...

I was surprized by the Gary Fisher, a very comfortable and easy ride, but the chain rings were just pressed metal, rivetted together. The frame and the rest of the components seem very nice--why be...

The Gt is a "Tempest," aluminum frame, in nice condition. The only problem it has is with the shifters, and they are a mystery to me why they don't work, even after a thorough cleaning. It has...

Mountain Bike Finds and Bottom Brackets

Here are 2 of the 3 mountains bikes I've found lately, a Trek 830, a Gary Fisher Tarpon, and (not pictured) a GT All Terra. I normally look for road bikes, but these were too hard to pass up, about...

Trek 830

Tom,
The more I fiddled around with the chain and derailleur, I realized how true your advice is. Alas, I don't have the tools to do a cassette, so I cleaned up the old chain and put it back on, and...

Trek 830

Picked up this Trek 830 off Craigslist about a month ago. I’ve fixed up a number of bikes, but I've never seen one with this much honest, hard use: bottom bracket and one chain ring completely worn...

Thrift shops or junkyard?

Bornhere,
