could it be that manufacturers want to lower the per-frame cost of the high end frames, so they stick lower end components on it to get it into a price that's accessible to more buyers?

i have one. right now i have 40c tires on there. a little trouble getting the knobs past the brake pads, but that's the only problem. pretty sure there's room for 44's too, might find out for myself....

that's definately doable. with sram and campy you can easily gut the shifter to be brake only (cos weight), but i've heard shimano is like black magic, so i wouldn't do it.

Found a group that does long gravel rides on sunday mornings. usually 40+ miles. while it's still warm, there's usaully a stop for some beers. :)
