I was considering buying a disc at a great price, but I couldn't find the axle so that was the deal-breaker. I've since ordered a modern disc.

That's a reference to the "Q-Factor", the width (outside-to-outside) of the cranks when installed. Some like it narrow. Some find wider Q-Factor cranks difficult to spin fast. Most don't notice...
