I was pre-diabetic with blood sugar consistently above 160. So I went low carb dropped 150 pounds and started riding my bike.
Blood sugar is now fine with A1c 4.8 (no meds)

about as steep as painted cave (which is rated as one of the hardest climbs in Socal)....

Gibraltar plus fig is sweet. The hardest ride I've done is gib+fig+refugio pass; 115 miles with 16k climbing. Took me weeks to recover.
But that was 20 years ago in my glory days.

To measure heart recovery rate measure your pulse after hard exercise and then measure it again after 1 minute of rest....
