Update: 11 years and 2 months after I posted this, my Nexus 8 is still going strong at 60,000km. I drilled and tapped a hole and use ATF, drain and add 15ml every 5-6,000km. I have no complaints...

I wouldn't use tire liners - had bad experiences with Mr. Tuffys BITD. After some months of use, the liners' ends eroded the tubes and caused flats.

About the fixed cup removal, I've seen it used successfully, but I think it works more because of the heat rather than by providing a sure way to hold the cup.
