I like it a lot and would definitely recommend it, especially for a CX bike or a randonneur type build. I've had their levers on my CX bike for about 4 years and wouldn't consider anything else for that application. You basically get the reliability and crisp shifting of a bar end shifter with the shifters within reach from the hoods. If you're the type to ride mostly from the drops they wouldn't be as convenient but I'm almost always on the hoods so it works well for me.
The shifters that come with these levers by default don't have a rear friction mode, but you can get them without a shifter and mount your own bar end or downtube shifter on their widget. @
jyl has a bike set up with vintage Simplex shifters on RetroShift (their old name) levers.
BTW, the bike that just won best of show at NAHBS had a custom set of Gevenalle levers with Campagnolo shifters.
