Interestingly, I think the bike I'm eyeballing comes with 52x36. I kind of miss it. If I steer clear of really steep hills (and my driveway) a standard crank would probably be fine too.
Imperial / cannon would kick my ass, as would the ski lifts and/or the tramway in Palm Desert.
52/11 will get you to around 40 mph at a reasonable cadence or 45 spun out. After that its top tube tuck.
There is one TT I do where I was considering a 56 but that only adds ~3 1/2 mph. Don't think the cost of new crankset and rings are worth it
