That's what I thought. How does a word go from meaning lead (like a lead brick, perhaps?) to meaning confidently and with assurance? Something to ponder on another bike commute, I suppose.
Aplomd also means vertical stability, like when you put a leaded weight at the end of a string to make sure something is vertical.
