I actually just have a couple pairs of black socks that I pull on over the shoe. Sometimes I put a plastic back over the toe of the shoe before pull the sock over it...just to toe. Works are a windbreaker, but still can ventilate.

Exactly right. You need a wind barrier and light insulation. Too tight = cold and cold fast.
