When it's your time, it's your time, but if I can put the odds in my favor with regards to survival, I will do so. And where I ride I'm not so much concerned about two-legged threats, but four-legged ones. I've not been bitten yet but I came close once when a little nipper just got my heel. Had he been a bigger dog I'm sure he'd have taken a chunk out of my leg.
