Those look like Sub 15 wheels, which are not going to take a lot of abuse. Still, he might have gotten the cog off if he'd used a bench vise. I've had cogs that I couldn't remove with a chain whip, but was able to with a bench vise. Also, anti-seize compound works better than grease.
