Thanks for the info.

I think I'm a long ways away from being strong enough to be able to use the hoods bit for making moves and such, but it made me think that maybe that will help me a bit in terms of efficiency when I'm hanging on for dear life.

I've watched some more races since my earlier post, and it seems that riders are really using that curved in bit to simulate an aero bar position, to the point they're even doing sprints (in points events, I think it was a Madison I was watching) seated in the "aero position" and actually winning the points.
