I asked a similar question recently but it appears that using a fattie in any other configuration is looked upon, by some, as sacrilege (
). I understand that, although it does share some similarities with mountain bikes, it isn't quite the same but some of us don't want to buy another bike (or, in my case, have spouses that don't want us to add another one to the stable) so considering a second wheelset is all we've got.
In terms of tires/tyres, that is your decision to make because only you know what type of terrain you wish to ride on: deep knobs, shallow knobs?
However, that might make a difference in terms of the rim. You've said you want a tubeless plus tire but other than brand or model preference, there might be differences between them that might make one more suitable for some tires and others more suitable for other tires. Maybe those differences are small though: I've run 35mm to 2.4" tires on my 29er and they've worked fine.
The only consideration that you might have to address is whether or not your frame and fork will support a 29er+. You say the bike has 4.0" tires? Is this the frame's limit or can it run 4.6" or 4.8"? If the frame is limited to 4.0", then width aside (as the plus size of both 27.5: and 29" wheels use narrower tires than even 4.0"), you might need to consider the height of the 29er+ tires and perhaps go with a 27.5" plus wheelset.
