Like others mentioned above...I also wear my nice, comfortable (padded) shorts as my base layer. Depending on the temp, I may or may not use and insulation layer of something light, followed by an outer aero/tight layer. Which I will admit is a pair of my wife's old yoga pants. They became too stretched out for her liking...perfect for my use in the winter on the bike.
