I did have this happen once, and had cycled all the way home before realising. When I called it from my wife's phone, fortunately an honest person had picked it up and we were able to rendezvous.
I have twice, in 15 years of owning a phone, dropped phones on bike paths that were picked up by honest citizens and returned to me, and on the previous occasion it fell out of a backpack (I think).
