In 1980 I wanted a new Masi Gran Criterium, the cost was $1800, not including tires. Adjusted for inflation, that would be nearly $6000 today, for a steel frame, friction shifting, and 12 speeds. I wish I still had it.

Makers always (if they are smart) have "luxury" models in their lineup, as the luxury market tends to remain consistent despite changes in the economy.
