you can but there are issues. so for the most part you are correct.

you can ride on the hoods & the tops of the bars & I got accustomed to it. also when it's the coldest, you want to keep the hand in a more closed protected fist to maintain the heat. I've even tossed a hand warmer into the bar mitt

the straight bar units allow regular & full positioning.
