1989 Miyata Country Runner

Hello, all. Looking for thoughts on how to proceed with mostly intact, low mileage Miyata. Only thing that looks broken is the rear derailleur shifter (Shimano Exage Trail). I’m new to wrenching, but thought maybe this could be a learning project. Should I renew with new components e. g. single speed etc., or clean and restore? Thanks for your opinions!
