It replaced another unit, which had serious problems. Just about all cruising and many racing boats have furlers, but they're slow because they don't allow the sail to come all the way down to the deck. If you don't have a furler, you put sails up and take them down, often simultaneously, which is a lot of work, usually in bad weather and at 3 am.
I had to look it up, and that's a pretty cool gadget. Not as cool as a torque wrench that measures angle, but still pretty cool.
