A cousin of mine died many years ago after falling off a skateboard and hitting his head on a curb. He wasn't wearing a helmet, but I don't know if one would have saved his life.

It seems that everything in life is about managing risk. Of course, we all have our own experiences and opinions on what that actually means for us.
