Fuji and then Giant ... as far as being the most cost-benefit positive for the name brands.
Everyone makes decent bikes which should serve you two. My only question would be ... more or less pavement than gravel/packed dirt? I like the Fuji Yari for gravel and the Gran Fondo for roads.
