Protecting your ears and nose from the sun is pretty important, especially if you happen to be of Irish or Scottish descent. The problem with baseball caps is that your ears are not protected. As for your nose, probably the best thing is a nose shield like there is on some glacier goggles worn by mountaineers.
There's always bandanas, and winter is right around the corner, so neoprene masks will be back in vogue in certain locales. Ear coverage is a problem, but a boonie hat as posted earlier would work, as would straw hats which some seem to prefer.
