You are absolutely right, it is a "stretch" but actually still within the cage/angle rule as long as you don't go big-big. It was a compromise to keep it working when on the little ring up front and still work well/ok in all the middle gears. Did very well all the way around and won't stay that way.
Are there longer cage derailleurs that would allow you to have a longer chain?
I think I remember there are differences in Campagnolo pull ratios between speeds, so I don't know a cool looking 6 speed Campagnolo RD is replaceable for a shorter cage, or not quite as cool looking 8 speed...
