If you are a cook, go to Kamata Knife shop in Tokyo. Best knife shop ever. Even the basic models are great. And the Bamboo Temple near Kamakura is the most sublime place on earth. If you are a walking anachronism like me, look up fountain pen shops in Tokyo. We didn't get there but the volcanic steam sands on Kyushu look good. The Halonei steam baths, hot springs are fabulous.
