On another note, is there a way to adjust the hydraulic brakes contact point to lessen some of the free travel before the brakes engage? I know about the reach adjustment but that doesn't quite do it...YMMV

Two different things: (lever) reach adjust and bite-point adjust. They are independent. Most hydros have the former, but the latter tends to come only on upper-mid/high-end brakes.

AFAIK there is no real way to adjust bite-point on hydraulic discs that don't have the adjustment: essentially, the travel from pad to rotor is 'set' by the distance the seals will retract the pads.
