I'm so fortunate to be in a field where I got paid to do my PhD. Sure it was a pittance and took 8 years, but I doubt I would have done it if I'd had to pay my way. The annoying thing is that my degree pushed me out of doing what I enjoy (the research) and into what I don't enjoy (the running a lab and writing grants). Though I do like the teaching.
