California used to practically give away wild pig tags. Something like $7 for a book of 5 tags. Then ranchers with wild pig populations realized that hunters would pay to hunt pigs and started charging hundreds of dollars per pig for the privilege, and the state realized they could get in on the action. Pig tags are now about $25 each, which is still pretty cheap. But it's a lot more than $7 bucks for 5 tickets.

The meat is denser and more strongly flavored than domestic pork, and boars acquire a decidedly off-putting taste, but younger pigs and sows can be pretty tasty, especially braised or stewed.
