Most people with balance problems opt for a trike. It has fewer negative impressions than using a set of training wheels and is probably more fun.

I let quite a few people test ride my two wheeled recumbents. My Linear LWB was particularly easy for someone to hop on and get used to the handling in a short distance. The short wheelbase Haluzak Horizon was a bit more difficult. No one ever crashed either bike. It happens though. Another friend let someone try his Streetmachine and they crashed it within about 100 feet. No damage to the bike but the rider was hurting for a while.
