Yeah, that works with a standard, where you hang out on the small ring at low speeds until you're going fast enough to shift up.
You have to think differently with a compact.
I use mine exactly like @
Dean V -- stay on the big ring preferentially, shift down to the small ring (practically a granny) only when you need to climb a steep or long hill.
