I think they will be near impossible to find 40mm non Carbon rims - clincher or tubular. Last rims of that depth I am aware of was the Campagnolo Shamal which were 41mm deep rims (the older version - newer black rims were 39mm)

34mm for the American Classic 420's are about as deep as current Aluminium rims go...

With most of the Carbon Clinchers such as the Alex posted above are really only a low aluminium rim with a carbon fairing. So from a reliability perspective, I think you should find them okay though very heavy.
