It seems to me like recovery rides are as effective as not riding. But they're kind of boring. I've got a couple of MUP routes that I take when I want to slow down. I'll be riding those for the next couple of days.
Not necessarily . . . sacrificing 30 miles today might give you the mojo to do well more than 30 additional miles spread over the following ~8 days.
