There used to b a fellow about 5 miles outside of town and he fixed a lot of bikes and I'd sometimes help him. One day he showed me a bike with a loose bottom bracket. It was a Shimano cartridge unit. When I opened up the bottom bracket the one half of the broken bottom bracket spindle fell off. I've never seen a broken cartridge square taper bottom bracket spindle before then.
